Goals in quick succession from Charley Doyle and Ben Elliott helped Prescot Cables advance into the next round of the Isuzu FA Trophy.
Lancaster City sat at the top of the table going into this one with their hosts only six places and seven points behind; both sides were coming into the game off the back of 0-0 draws.
The visitors posed more of a threat in the opening affairs, but tame efforts from fullback Joe Amison and forward Lewis Mansell struggled to really test Calvin Hare in the Prescot goal.
The Cables slowly grew into the game with a flurry of corners, but the league leaders defended well and managed to avoid troubling their goalkeeper, Brad Kelly.

Prescot’s number nine, John Murphy, could have opened the scoring from a well-worked corner. The low ball gave him the freedom of the box to score, but his shot whistled just over the bar. Murphy looked to make up for his last effort after being played in behind by his strike partner, Ben Elliott. Unfortunately, his curling effort was tipped just wide by Kelly in goal.
With the first 45 minutes coming to a close, Lancaster looked to edge ahead after a corner from set-piece specialist Bobby Bjork found Toby Oliver at the back post, his glanced effort agonisingly bounced wide of the left post.
Both managers stuck with their starting elevens going into the second half, with the Cables managing to create their first chance. A driven through ball found Elliott inside the Blues’ box, his low cross was pounced on by Kelly.
Dom Lawson’s work down the left wing was almost rewarded as he freed up some space to unleash a looping shot. Hare was alert to the problem and managed to tip the ball over acrobatically.
The first substitution introduced Charley Doyle into the midfield battle as captain James Devine seemed to go off with an injury within the first ten minutes.
The midfielder didn’t take long to make an impact on the game and opened the scoring from a corner. Tom Scully floated his corner towards the back post, Doyle found himself unmarked and guided his header into the bottom corner.

The lead was doubled only two minutes later, with Elliott continuing to add to his stellar start to the season. The forward bagged his seventh goal of the season in all competitions.
Hare pumped a free kick from his half into the box, Elliott brought the ball down well and worked the angle to squeeze his effort past Kelly to double the lead.
The visitors struggled to find any way back into the game and almost found themselves down by three after Finlay Cross-Adair’s chipped effort beat Kelly but sailed just wide of the left post.
Prescot Cables saw the game out from there and kept possession from their opponents for longer periods of the game. Lancaster’s momentum declined from here, and the hosts progressed in the competition.
Guiseley are next to visit the Auto Safety Centre Stadium in the FA Trophy. The first round of the tournament will be played on Saturday, 25th October at 3pm.
